Our one-piece mouthpieces can be ordered with any configuration found within our two-piece mouthpiece selection. We offer three rim shapes, “R”, “S”,  “W”, in five widths, ranging from .630” to .670” inner diameter as measured at the point where the rim meets the cup. Each are offered in six cup depths, “ES”, “S”, “MS”, “M”, “MD”, and “D”. Standard throat size is a #27 (,144”) throat and a choice of four backbore shapes. Tightest to most open they are “L” Lead, “C” Commercial, ”S” Studio, and “P” Philharmonic. Other backbores available. Please visit our backbore page. 

In addition, shanks can also be cut for sleeves, or for our proprietary Gap Modulator.

James R New Mouthpiece Tops  $100. each

Our tops have been designed with three popular and comfortable rim shapes, each at five diameters ranging from an inner diameter of .630” to .670” We measure the inner diameter at the point where contour arcs change direction or the point where a rim meets the bowl or cup of the mouthpiece. Each rim shape at each diameter is offered with six cup depths, “ES”, “S”, “MS”, “M”, “MD”,and “D”. Thread size is 3/8″-40 which is compatible with many popular backbore designs. 

Custom throat diameters can also be requested for both your tops and your backbore sections. From #29 to #22 are the most popular. #27 is considered standard by much of the industry. There is no extra cost for this service. Please specify at the time of order. If we are currently out of stock, we will reply by email with an estimated shipping date.

Rim Shapes

“R”  Round, is designed for greater flexibility, modeled after the rim used by Del Steiger renowned for his flexibility studies.

“S”      Standard is designed for comfort with a soft bite and plenty of support for comfort. Comparable to a quality Bach 3C rim shape

“W”     Wide rim with a greater degree of curvature at the high point. Designed to give aide and support for greater endurance and has a sharper bite for more responsive attacks.

Cup Depths

“ES” = very shallow bowl shaped

“S”  =   shallow bowl shaped cup designed to assist in the upper registers, and add brilliance to the sound quality. Comparable to Reeves “S” cup depth.

“MS” = designed to be midway between “M” and “S” cup “M”  =  comparable to a “C” depth cup, good for all-around use. One of the most widely used cup depths in production today.

“M”  =  comparable to a “C” depth cup, good for all-around use. One of the most widely used cup depths in production today.

“MD” = designed to be midway between “M” and “D”

“D”  =  deep cup designed to produce rich, warm, darker sound qualities

James R New Backbores $90 each

Our stock backbore sections are offered in four sizes. Tightest to most open they are, “L” Lead, ”, “C” Commercial, ”S” Studio, and “P” Philharmonic. Each can be ordered with the throat of choice, #29 through #24 are most common. Please specify at the time of order. 

We offer three shapes, standard, hex, and heavy. The hex shape allows for eaisier removal of stuck backbones. A common 1/2” open end wrench will help to grip the stuck backbone. No more plier marks on your mouthpieces. The hex backbore also offers a slightly heavier weight, while the heavy slightly more weight.

Any of our backbores can be custom cut for the Gap Modulator at an additional cost of $50 or for sleeves,  each at an additional cost of $30. The gap Modulator comes with one threaded sleeve to adjust the gap and one lock nut to maintain the chosen setting. View details in our GapModulator section.

“L”  =  The “L” Lead backbore is our tightest backbore. For those who only play in the upper registers. High compression backbore with focused sound. Great projection. 

“C”  =  “C” Commercial backbore has great highs and full bodied core to the sound. Freer blowing than most commercial backbores. 

“S”  =  “S” Studio is designed for playing in every circumstance. Will blend with sections in concert, symphonic, chamber work as well as jazz. Great all-around backbore

“P”  =  “P” Philharmonic has that dark free blowing backbore that orchestra directors love to hear. Blends well within sections.
